We are thrilled to present artwork created by the kids taking part in our Youth Engagement programme.
Education has always been at the core of Happy Valley Pride’s mission, we make it a priority to educate the next generation with lessons of tolerance, love and equality.
This year, we have worked with schools and youth groups across Calderdale to help students learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community, anti-bullying and the diversity of families in our area.
The Happy Valley Pride Youth Engagement Programme is led by Terry Logan, working with Adam Pryce, and plays a leading role in the provision of quality creative learning for young people around LGBTQIA+ life through education and art. Our youth work has been recognised by Stonewall and recently won a Service to the Community award from Hebden Royd Town Council.
The Youth Pride Takeover forms part of The Big Day Out on the 26th July.
Please note that the Town Hall is not open on Sundays.
The exhibition also features work by Mitchell Robinson called 'Inalienable' a response to Section 28.
Section 28 was a much hated law prohibiting the'promotion of homosexuality... as a pretended family relationship’ enacted 1988 and only fully repealed in 2003.Teachers were banned from teaching about same-sex relationships and many student support groups were forced to shut or self censor.
Artist Mitchell Robinson’s entire education was under the influence of Section 28. It would be years later, when he finally heard and understood this term, that he recognised the impact it had on him; silence, fear and isolation. In response Mitchell undertook a series of interviews with others impacted by Section 28 including; Teachers, Pupils and Activists ultimately creating ‘Inalienable’ in 2025.
'Children who need to be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay.’(Quote by Margaret Thatcher).
With thanks to Austin Allen, Zebedee Friedman, Darren Spruce, Tim Whitehead and others who wished to remain anonymous for your time, openness and honesty during the interviews.
