Happy Valley Pride stands proudly with the trans and non-binary community across the Calder Valley and beyond.

We recognise the Supreme Court ruling today on definitions of biological sex, and its significance for protecting women against sex discrimination.

We note that this ruling also reiterates legal protections on the basis of gender reassignment for transgender people, whether or not they have a Gender Recognition Certificate. We note that the ruling states that trans women can claim sex discrimination because they are perceived to be women.

We acknowledge Lord Hodge’s comment:
“We counsel against reading this judgement as a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another, it is not."

We stand for unity.

We recognise that this ruling will leave many trans people, their families and loved ones feeling deeply anxious about the implications for their everyday lives and what will come next.
We urge the whole LGBTQIA+ community and our allies to remain calm, to stand together and support each other now and into the future.

Happy Valley Pride will continue to provide inclusive spaces, creative opportunities and artistic programming that welcome anyone and everyone who wants to support and celebrate LGBTQIA+ people.

Standing together, the LGBTQIA+ community has a long history of standing up to discrimination and exclusion and speaking up for equal rights within and beyond our own communities.

Whilst Happy Valley Pride is not a campaigning organisation, we wanted to speak up today to reaffirm our commitment to being truly inclusive.

Today, we stand alongside our friends and allies in our wonderful valley and we prevail, heads held high as we crack on with organising Happy Valley Pride Festival 2025 as usual.
