Immediately engaging, Alli Haapasalo’s (Love and Fury) candid, spirited, buoyant drama follows a trio of Finnish teens exploring desire and first love.
High school best friends Mimmi (Aamu Milonoff) and Rönkkö (Eleonoora Kauhanen) work at the smoothie kiosk in the local mall, exchanging gossip, jokes over the names of the drinks they sell, and their frustrations about / expectations of love and sex. They’re both single, and while the indefatigable Rönkkö is seeking an instant spark, the more cynical Mimmi protests there’s no such thing – until she meets elite ice skater Emma (Linnea Leino), and finds just that.
Shot by Jarmo Kiuru in a piquant colour palette and ratio (1.33:1) that enhance the film’s freshness and authenticity, Girls Girls Girls’ endearing lead characters and their struggles feel intimately real. With a witty script and nuanced performances, it’s serious about the emotional terrain of teenage life, the thrill of desire and the confusion of first love in a way that will console and compel teen audiences. Winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance.
